One-Piece or Modular? Choosing the Right Mouthpiece System
There are already plenty of decisions involved in choosing a mouthpiece: rim diameter, cup depth, throat, backbore, material, and overall feel.
Then comes another question:
Should you choose a traditional one-piece mouthpiece or a modular system?
Both can be excellent choices. In fact, a one-piece and a modular mouthpiece built around the same basic design can provide very similar playing characteristics. The important difference is not that one system is inherently better. It is how much flexibility you want—and how you prefer to manage your equipment.

What is a one-piece mouthpiece?
A one-piece mouthpiece combines the available components into a single, permanent piece.
On a trumpet mouthpiece, for example, the rim, cup, throat, backbore, and shank are all manufactured as one unit. Once you have selected the combination you want, there are no separate components to assemble or keep track of.
That simplicity is appealing!
A one-piece mouthpiece comes out of the case ready to play. There are no threads to maintain and no possibility of pairing it with the wrong component. If you have found a combination that works consistently across your playing, a one-piece mouthpiece may be all you need.
Many players also appreciate the traditional appearance and feel of a one-piece design.
What is a modular mouthpiece?
A modular mouthpiece divides the design into interchangeable components.
Our Pickett modular trumpet mouthpieces use a separate top and backbore. The top contains the rim, cup, and throat entrance, while the backbore includes the remainder of the throat, the backbore profile, and the shank that enters the instrument.
The two components thread together to create a complete mouthpiece.
Our two-piece trombone system takes a different approach. It uses a separate screw rim and underpart, allowing the player to combine a preferred rim with an appropriate cup, throat, and shank.
The exact components vary among instrument families, but the purpose is the same: modularity lets the player change one part of the mouthpiece without necessarily changing everything else.


The primary advantage: changing one variable at a time
Suppose a trumpet player is completely comfortable with a particular rim and cup. The mouthpiece feels secure, articulations respond well, and the player does not want to disturb that relationship.
However, the player may want a different balance of resistance or response for another instrument or musical setting.
With a modular system, that player can retain the familiar top and test a different backbore. This allows one part of the setup to change while the rim and cup remain constant.
The same principle applies to a trombone player who likes the cup and underpart but wants to explore a different rim profile or material.
This is one of the most useful qualities of a modular system: it helps isolate variables.
When an entire mouthpiece is changed at once, it can be difficult to determine which design feature produced the difference. Was it the rim, the cup, the throat, or the backbore?
Changing one component at a time makes the comparison more focused.
One familiar rim for different playing situations
For many musicians, the rim is the most personal part of the mouthpiece. It is the point of direct contact between the player and the equipment, and even small changes can be noticeable.
A modular system may allow a player to preserve that familiar contact while adjusting another part of the mouthpiece.
A trumpet player might use the same top with different backbores for orchestral, chamber, commercial, or piccolo trumpet playing. A trombone player may keep the same rim while selecting an underpart better suited to a different register, instrument, or musical role.
This does not mean every player needs several configurations. It simply means that options are available without requiring the player to start over with a completely different mouthpiece.

The case for a one-piece mouthpiece
Flexibility is valuable, but it's not always necessary.
If you already know the rim, cup, throat, and backbore combination you want, a one-piece mouthpiece provides that complete setup in a straightforward form.
It can be an especially good choice for:
- Players who use one primary setup for most of their work
- Students who would benefit from keeping equipment decisions simple
- Musicians who do not want to manage separate components
- Players who have finished experimenting and settled on a preferred combination
- Anyone who simply prefers a traditional one-piece design
There is also something to be said for removing temptation. A modular system makes experimentation easy, but constant experimentation can become a distraction. If a one-piece mouthpiece works well, there is no obligation to change it.
The case for a modular system
A modular system is particularly useful for players whose work changes regularly or who want to fine-tune a specific part of the setup.
It may be a good fit for:
- Players who use several trumpets or related instruments
- Musicians who perform in contrasting styles
- Teachers who help students compare equipment
- Players who want to evaluate backbores independently
- Trombonists who want to retain a familiar rim across appropriate underparts
- Musicians who are still identifying their preferred combination
Modularity can also make future adjustments more practical. If your musical responsibilities change, you may be able to add a component instead of purchasing a completely separate mouthpiece.

More choices are useful only when they have a purpose
A modular system can offer many possible combinations. That can be empowering, but it can also become overwhelming.
The goal is not to try every component simply because it exists. The goal is to identify what you like about your present setup, determine what you want to change, and then test the component most likely to address that goal.
Before changing anything, ask:
- What do I like about my current mouthpiece?
- What specific playing characteristic am I trying to change?
- Do I want a different physical feel, sound, response, resistance, or application?
- Which single component is most relevant to that goal?
For example, if the rim already feels comfortable, changing the rim, cup, throat, and backbore simultaneously may create more questions than answers. Keeping the familiar components in place gives you a better reference point.

Test the complete setup
Although modular components can be discussed separately, a mouthpiece only works as a complete system—with the player and instrument included.
A backbore does not perform in isolation. Its behavior is affected by the top, throat, instrument, and player. Likewise, a cup or rim that works beautifully for one musician may not be the right fit for another.
When testing a new combination, use familiar exercises and music. Play in every register and at different dynamic levels. Evaluate articulation, flexibility, intonation, endurance, sound, and overall comfort.
If possible, record yourself or ask a trusted teacher or colleague to listen. What feels different behind the instrument may not sound as different across the room—and sometimes the opposite is true.
Give the combination enough time to understand it, but remain clear about the problem you intended to solve.
So, which system should you choose?
Choose a one-piece mouthpiece if you value simplicity, already know the complete combination you want, or prefer to keep one dependable setup in your case.
Choose a modular mouthpiece if you want to preserve certain familiar features while experimenting with others, use multiple instruments or musical settings, or prefer the ability to make focused adjustments over time.
Neither choice makes someone a more serious player. They are simply two ways of organizing the same important elements.
The best mouthpiece system is the one that helps you stop thinking about equipment and start concentrating on the music.
